“Overwhelmed”

Growing up, my parents worked in student ministries on University campuses.  They met many international students who came to the United States not knowing Jesus Christ personally.  One student, Ming, was Buddhist.  Her roommate in the dorm, Esther, was Christian.   She did not impose her faith on Ming, but lived out Christlikeness with kindness and respect. The girls became friends and genuinely cared for each other.   Ming was introduced to Esther’s friends and invited to student ministry events.  During the school year students talked with Ming about Jesus.  Toward the end of the spring semester, Ming invited Christ into her life as Lord and Savior.  She was later asked what was said to bring her to this decision.  Ming replied, “It was nothing anyone said.  Esther, built a bridge from her heart to mine and Jesus walked across it”.

In the light of the violent summer we have had, it is tempting to ask where God has been during all of this.  The answer is that He resides in you and me – as the temples of The Holy Spirit.  Where has God been?  Wherever we have been willing to take Him.  He has chosen to work through His followers.  When we refuse to go and minister to those in need, we limit His ability to heal the broken and save the lost.

Today, it seems our world has gone completely mad, with one act of senseless violence after another.  It’s easy to become overwhelmed with a sense of hopelessness and helplessness.  These are over whelming times.  And we are faced with 2 choices.  We can either be overwhelmed by a since of helplessness or we can be overwhelmed by a since of purpose.

The book of Esther recounts the story of desperate times for the Jews.  Their nation had been conquered and taken into exile. Now a plan had been set in motion for the mass genocide of the Jewish exiles.  Talk about hopelessness.  They were a people without a country or a government.  And no judicial system to turn to for protection.  The story’s heroin, Esther, was a slave in the King’s harem – a literal sex slave.  Despite being chosen for marriage by the king, this arrangement has nothing to do with love or what Esther desired for her life.  Her duty was to come running whenever the king calls and if he did not summon her she was never to approach him.  To do so was punishable by death.   Talk about helpless.  But Esther chooses to see her situation differently.  Instead of being overwhelmed by helplessness she is overwhelmed by the sense of duty and purpose.  She ignores the reality staring her in the face and chooses to believe that God has placed her there for such a time as this.  With the encouragement of a godly uncle and a group of friends who pray and fast with her she breaks the law by approaching the king to plead for the lives of her people.  It would’ve been so easy for Esther to say there’s nothing she could do and in fact, in the “natural”, that appeared to be the case.  But Esther realized that the spiritual truth is that God is always working, that God had a plan and the purpose for her life was to submit to His authority instead of man’s authority.  God used Esther’s obedience to expose the deceptive plot to exterminate the Jews and thousands were saved.

We have in us the literal Spirit of the Almighty God who councils us, encourages us and gives us strength.  We have been promised by Jesus The Righteous that He will be with us as we minister to the world (Matthew 28:20).  And we have been given all authority to do this work in the great commission (Matthew 28:18-19) When the world asks “where is God”, that is not a condemnation of God but of His followers.

Join me today in prayer for the boldness to do what we have been call to…empower to…and authorized to do!

Love and Be Loved

“We though, are going to love- love and be loved. First we were loved, now we love. God loved us first.” -1 John 4:19

There is something so powerful about knowing that we are loved. The knowledge that we are loved manifests in our lives as confidence, openness, generosity, and many other positive character traits. I wholeheartedly believe that we are at our best when we are loved well!

Something else that’s beautiful about love is that it produces more love. People who ARE loved, GIVE love; and the cycle continues.

This isn’t a new-fangled, warm fuzzy idea. The Apostle John wrote about it centuries ago in his letter to the Christian believers of the first century. He said that we love because God first loved us. Heck, he said that the only reason we even know what love IS, is that God demonstrated it to us. John goes on to reason that if we know God, we know love. And if we’ve received love from God, that we will give it to those around us.

How powerful is that? God, the origin of love, embraces us in love and empowers us to do the same to others- even to those who do not yet know True Love. The same positive results that grow from God’s love in us can grow in those around us as we extend the unconditional, radically inclusive, heart-healing love of God to them.

I challenge you to read 1 John with me this week. Read it, think on it, and look for ways to ACT on it. YOU, my friend, are deeply loved. Rest in that and let True Love produce all kinds of wonderful things in your life- radiance, generosity, peace, gentleness!

I AM WITH YOU

“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)

We all have stuff we’re afraid of. It might be the fear of speaking in front of others, the fear of heights, and the fear of going to the dentist, or perhaps some other fear. Regardless of what type of fear it is, we all face situations in life when we’re afraid.

This Bible verse gives us some good news when it comes to fear. It tells us to not be afraid. We don’t have to be afraid because we have a hope that others don’t. We know that God will strengthen us and help us in each situation that we face.

We have someone who knows the future and the past, who has unlimited wisdom and resources and who is saying that He will help us. When we realize the fact that God is on our side, that He’s ready to walk with us through any situation or circumstance that we might face, we can see why He tells us to not be afraid. God won’t let us down, so we have no reason to be afraid.

If you struggle in the area of fear, be encourage that God will strengthen you, and He will never leave you.

Ephesians 5:15-17

When I was in my twenties, I would dream about all of the things in my life. It felt like I had so much time left – plenty of time to work for God and to enjoy my life. Now that I am older, I realize how easily time can just slip away.

At first you think, “a few minutes a day – it doesn’t really seem that significant”.  However, when you consider that minutes become hours, hours become days, days become weeks, months and eventually years – it can give a whole new perspective on time. Even while you’ve been reading this devotional, about 10 seconds have passed from your life which you can never go back and decide to use those 10 seconds differently.

Understanding the value of each moment, the apostle Paul urges us to purposely use our time wisely. In Eph. 5:16 (TMB) Paul says this:

“Don’t waste your time on useless work, mere busywork, the barren pursuits of darkness. Expose these things for the sham they are…”

Are there things in your life that God dropped in your heart years ago?  For me it was to learn Italian. I have wanted to do this for years and always put it off. Only recently I have begun to take about 15 mins. a day and watch a youtube lesson on Italian….”Mi piace molto.”

What are the things God dropped in your heart or even revealed to you that He wants you to do?   Like most of us, you probably say to yourself…I’ll start that tomorrow. Yet tomorrow comes and then we say, ok next week. Then more time passes, and we find that, again, minutes have become hours, hours have become days, etc. Time just seems to pass by too quickly, and we begin to realize that our time on this earth is not infinite; that we are all given a certain number of days.  We can’t do anything with the time which has already passed.  But we can let today be a new day to start again, and resolve in our hearts that we will not get distracted.

Pastor Keith

Never!!!

The truth is – you will never overcome oppression until you believe this one simple truth: that God will NEVER leave YOU. That’s right – God never leaves us – not even in the dark times.

“And the Lord, He is the one who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.” (Deut. 31: 6-8, Joshua 1:5)

Why is it written so many times in the Bible that God will never leave us? God wants us to know that He is with us in EVERY situation. When we are being blessed, we tend to believe God is with us more than when tragedy happens or when we are going through a crisis, but God NEVER leaves us. We just think that He does. God NEVER forsakes us. We just think that He does. NEVER means NEVER . . . NOT EVER!

It is not easy to believe God is still in control when we hear about all the shootings, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. It is not easy to believe God is still in charge when loved ones are sick and death occurs. It is not easy to believe God is still with us when we encounter trouble on every side.

Why don’t you begin today by boldly saying “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:5-6) ‘He will never leave me or forsake me.’ This is His truth. This is His promise.

There is none like Him. Be strong. Be courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified, because the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave your nor forsake you.

Blessings,
Pastor Sherry

Kick Strife to the Curb!

Proverbs 17:14  (NKJV)
The beginning of strife is like releasing water;  Therefore stop contention before a quarrel starts.

Strife/division is one of the most common problems among believers. We let it get into our homes, friendships, jobs, and churches. Of course most of us do not purposely wake up every day with the intent to go around and stir up some strife; we just sometimes let it slip in one minor irritation at a time like the verse in proverbs 17 says “like a trickle”.  I am going to urge us all to take a stand against strife, to be aware of when the trickles start happening and if you know you have a tendency to let things irritate you decide to overcome that. Did you know we do not have to be irritated? We can choose to let things go and focus on the more important things like loving each other regardless of differences. We need to be mature and know that there are things in life that are going to be annoying, there are people that will let us down from time to time, but our reaction to it is ours! We can control whether we let strife in or not. It does not have to derail us and cause conflict, we can be different and disagree on things and be ok with that. We are all created differently and creatively by a God, we are not going to all think the same and agree on everything but if we focus on the big things that we should all agree on, like loving one another, and making a choice to not allow strife to enter in, then we can all head in the same direction together and embrace each other’s differences.  Differences can be celebrated and encouraged if handled correctly and viewed through kingdom eyes. We get into trouble when our own pride and beliefs want to control every situation all the time. We allow strife to come in when in our pride we think opinions different than our own are wrong. Make up your mind that you have the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit in your life to help you overcome strife and refuse to settle in it. Ask God to help you recognize when it starts to try and trickle in and take a stand against it. Strife is nothing more than a distraction to occupy your mind and emotions to keep you from doing and seeing all God wants you to. Strife is like a poison that kills from the inside out, don’t drink the poison, and don’t give it a moment of your time, as time is the thing we don’t have to waste.

The Real You

“Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we’ve been given a brand-new life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven-and the future starts now!”

Take a moment to think of some words you could use to describe yourself. Did the words you chose relate to your job? Your personality? Your hobbies or political affiliation? Your socio-economic status or cultural heritage? Of course they did, because these are the identifiers that we are reminded of constantly in our everyday lives. The thing is, we have an identity that is far more profound and far more true that has nothing to do with any of those things.

When Peter addressed the believers that would read his letter, he did not address them according to the city they lived in, their socio-economic status, their religious background, or their cultural heritage. He addressed them according to the new life they had all been given in God, because regardless of their situation, they had each been given the same glorious new life in the Spirit. And so have we. Just like Peter did for his readers, I want to remind you of the eternal, true identity that is yours now and that will remain after your job, hobbies, wealth, and political party are long gone.

You are chosen by God. You are God’s heir. You are shielded by God’s power. You are being proven pure- like gold refined in a fire. You believe without seeing and are blessed because of it. You are the righteousness of Christ. You are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. You are the carrier of the knowledge of God. You are the fragrance of Christ in the world. You are a son or daughter of Creator God. This is who you are.

To forget who we really are is to miss everything eternal that is already happening in our lives and in the world. It’s to live as though this life is all there is. Peter says that we’ve been given a brand NEW life and have everything to live for, including a future in heaven- and that the future starts now! We can live for more than our 9-5 and political debates and weekend barbecues. We can participate in the eternal projects that God already has going around us. Remember who you really are. Live in the “you” that will outlast this world.

Why Thankfulness Matters

On His way to Jerusalem, Jesus encountered 10 men with leprosy.  By law, people with leprosy were required to stay at least 100 paces away from the rest of society.  So the men called out to Jesus from a long distance saying, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on us”.  They didn’t wait until they felt worthy to approach Him or until they had come up with the right words to say.  They just spoke to Him from a point of desperation.  Just 6 words, but these words were apparently backed with a great deal of faith.  Jesus instructs them to go to the priests to prove that they have been healed and can re-enter society.  And before the healing had taken place, the men were on their way to be inspected by the priest.  Now that’s faith!  The scriptures tell us that as they went they were healed.  They must not have gotten very far, because one of the men, seeing that he was healed, turned back to thank Jesus.  He threw himself at the feet of Jesus and began praising God in a loud voice.   And Jesus said to the man, were their not 10 of you?  Where are the other 9?  Can you fathom receiving the gift of healing and not taking the time to thank the one who healed you?  It seems inconceivable.   Where was the gratitude?

I have a theory where the other 9 were.  Instead of being in a place of thankfulness, I think they were on to the next problem.  These men had been outcasts.  They needed jobs, places to live and new clothes.  So instead of stopping to thank the one who had restored their health, I think they were on to the next problem.  Can you relate?  I know that I can.  Far too often when I recognize an answer to one of my prayers my mind moves on to the next problem instead of stopping to meditate on His faithfulness.   I stay in the stress that I am accustom to instead of moving to a place of thankfulness and basking in His love for me.

Is there something you have to be thankful for?  Maybe you have never experienced a physical healing but Ephesians 2 says that you were dead in your sin and HE made us alive with Christ!  HE raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavily realms.  If you are a Christian then you have received an eternal healing that brought you back to life from being dead in sin and that is a far more precious healing that a physical one.

Being thankful keeps our hearts soft and tender toward the Lord.  When we neglect thankfulness to the Lord our hearts become hardened toward him and we lack grace toward each other.  Take a moment today to consider what your eternal healing cost Him on the cross and thank Him for what He has done for you.

I am thankful with every thought of you,
Pastor Jonathan

Give it to God

Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 ESV)

The word “yoke” means a piece of wood that is used to hold two animals together, usually oxen, to help them share the load in pulling a till or a buggy of some sort. The key here is that the yoke allows the animals to support each other in pulling the heavy weight.

As we live our lives, we are often times yoked by many things. We might be yoked with a personal decision that is weighing heavy on us. We might even be yoked with a spouse who helps us in the hard times. No matter how you look at it, we are yoked to something, whether good or bad.

Jesus tells us to come and take his yoke and we will find rest. Interestingly, Jesus doesn’t say he will take our burdens and attach his yoke to it as we stand-by and watch. No, he takes us under his yoke and carries those burdens with us along the way. In turn, he takes the majority of the burden and makes it “light” for us. We also “learn” from Jesus as we carry the burden with him. This allows us to learn to change from the inside instead of repeating the same wrong things over and over. Is there something pulling you down that you haven’t given to Jesus today? I urge you to give it to the one who can lighten your load simply by you asking him.

Blessings,
Pastor Gina

Spiritual Dipstick

As I am at the car dealership getting some routine maintenance done to my car, I began to think about how long and how far a driver could go if he never added oil to his engine or water to his radiator?  Eventually, without water to cool the radiator the smoke would start to billow from the hood and the car would start to overheat. And without the oil, nothing would be lubricated and you would start to hear metal hitting metal and the car could suffer huge damage.  Yet on the outside, when the car is parked, it looks perfectly fine. You would never know there was an issue until the car had to start moving.  Under the hood there is something called the “dip-stick”. This is the gauge by which you can measure the oil in the engine. There are lines on the dip stick showing exactly how much oil needs to be added.  When I am out driving the car, I would have no idea how much oil is in the engine. This is why I have to stop the car, open the hood and check.

Like the car which needs oil and water to run, we need certain things too. We have spiritual “dip-sticks” in our lives.  Trials, offenses, pressure…they all allow us to examine how much oil is in our engine. Oil is symbolic of the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. This is the anointing of God’s presence in your life. This comes through prayer and worship. Water speaks of the washing of the Word to cleanse our minds and soul.  If you find yourself frustrated, angry, or fearful, remember to pullover. Lift your spiritual hood and make sure to add oil and water to your engine.

Pastor Keith
